Jinn’s Jar
Residents relate the story of a 115-year old man, a member of WWI’s legendary ‘Wild Division’ cavalry, who said the elders of his day called the lake ‘Jinn’s Jar’, referring to powerful, demon-like spirits said to live in vessels shaped like lamps or jars and also because the lake’s shape resembled an inverted jar or lamp with narrowing neck downwards to a lip at its bottom.

During the Blue Lake Awareness Project we made a unique series of underwater photos with swans. It turns that nobody before us did this. Our photos became more and more popular in the world, and one of ‘swan photos’ entered Final in BBC’s Veolia Environnement Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2012 competition in category ‘Birds’.

There are not too many legends about white whales in this part of the world. People say that St Zosimus, the founder of the Solovetsky Monastery, sailed to the island on a beluga’s back. There is also a legend that speaks of sailors, out at sea for many months, would become mad and would see belugas as beautiful naked women. Here, specifically, began the myth of mermaids.
